New Sport: Twunning

When I first heard about Twitter a few years ago, my initial response was, "That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of."  Then I joined up because some people I was getting to know in another state were doing it, and it was a good way to keep up with them and make new friends.

Two  years and 1,696 tweets later, I still think it's pretty stupid - but useful in some strange and entertaining way.  I follow a diverse group of people: some are venture capitalists, some are entrepreneurs, some work for startups, some are famous, and some are regular friends.  I follow my husband, who never tweets except in response to mine, and someone else's mom (mine too, but she never tweets either).  I follow a few people who I actually had never met in person until November, and the great thing was, when we saw each other, we knew who the other person was and engaged in conversation.

Here's something funny though; two runners did the London Marathon and posted a tweet every mile of the race.  That is just insane!  I don't carry my phone when I run, mostly because I generally don't need it and I am afraid of losing/dropping it.  According to Wired, one of the runners used it as inspiration to get to the next mile:

"...And the great thing is, every mile you have to get your milestone of what you’re going to tweet. You have to think of something mildly amusing every mile.”

Peter Wilkinson and Alex Hoye finished the marathon in 3 hours 30 minutes and 5 hours 12 minutes respectively.  They both did it a hell of a lot faster than me - I've never run one (yet) but I'm pretty sure I'd take about 6 hours to do it).

Congratulations to both men on their races, and for twunning their way to the finish line!
