    Get Skinny with Song!

Heidi Roizen is a very successful entrepreneur and venture capitalist, and it looks like she's about to do it again, this time while getting herself in shape!  Her new venture is called SkinnySongs, and it's motivational tunes to work out to.  Heidi herself has apparently written many of the lyrics, and she's gotten the help of some big-time music artists to help her out with it (David Malloy for one...hey, that happens to be my uncle's name - but no, I'm not related to this one).

The music seems to be largely country-ish, which is not generally my thing, but the lyrics are great. If the words don't get you off your butt and moving, then you're just not interested.  The music is upbeat, of course, so you can really get going to some of it.  I haven't listened to all the songs but so far they sound like something I could adapt to for some variety.

When I run, I listen to music.  My normal choice of music is rock - classic, metal, grunge, and whatever kind of rock Linkin Park is (rap-rock?).  Anyway, you get the idea.  When I run and work out, though, I prefer to listen to techno/dance music.  I don't know if it's the beats or the fact that I don't know the words, but it really gets me going.  And it has to be really fast-paced (I don't "jog" - I run as fast as I can the entire time).  Because I run too fast to hold a normal conversation (jogging), I certainly can't scream or even lip-sync Metallica songs while I'm running down the street.  It just leaves me too breathless.  And despite the how fast metal music sounds, the beats are not that fast - it's the guitar riffs that are often really fast.

Country may be an alternative; I'll have to check it out.  While some of it is way too twangy for me (country in general, not this particular CD), I have to admit that I had front row tickets to every Alabama concert in my hometown for about 10 years when I was younger.  Let's just say I have an appreciation for all kinds of music, shall we?

Here is an excerpt* from the song Skinny Jeans (the song is about growing out of your favourite pair of jeans):

For years we were together, every Saturday night,
we’d go out dancin’, you’d hold me in tight,
but you were unforgiving and you wouldn’t let me grow
Now I can’t put you on -- but I can’t let you go

    *printed by permission!

I have a pair of jeans that I've had since I was 14 years old (let's just say that they are over 20 now).  Every year, just for grins, I've tried to put them on and zip them up (they are too short for me now though).  I couldn't put them on after Little P was born, and I thought I'd thrown them out.  A few weeks ago, while cleaning up some things in the closet, I came across them and tried to put them on.  Not only could I put them on, but I could zip them up and even sit down in them.  I considered cutting them off for shorts, but decided they are best left just as they are - as a way for me to judge my skinnyness once or twice a year.

Right now you can purchase Skinny Songs on Amazon.com for $14.99.  It's coming to iTunes soon.  There are also some motivational workout and casual t-shirts on the Skinny Songs site for purchase: "Use it to Lose It", "You Can't Buy Thin", and my favourite, "Does My Butt Look too Small in This?".  I'm definitely going to have to check this out further!

Nod to Ben Casnocha for the original post yesterday.
